KAASHIDHOO - FOLK STORIES AND TALES

Kaashidhoo is linked to many folk stories from the maldivian story tellers.

Araamagu Dhon Kamana

The most famous of such stories is perhaps the story of 'Araamagu Dhon Kamana'. The story tells about a woman spirit who came from the sea and she falls in love with a toddy extractor in Kaashidhoo. They live a happy life until a wise man comes to the island and exposes to her husband that she is not a human being. these things were discovered when he broke the promise he made to her not to watch her take bath and cook.

The discovery was terrifying and shocking for him, she took fishes from the well and used a thorn in her ankles as firewood.

Raged by the fact that her husband had broken the promise, she left the island. While she was going, she divided the children they had. they had five children. She took two of them, gave two to the husband, and the remaining child was sliced into two halves and she took one half with her when she went back to the sea.

There is also a film created about the story but it doesn't tell the story as it has been told by the story tellers. The director of the film modified the story. And because of that many people of the Maldives now may not know the original version. We will soon publish a good version of the story written by a writer from Kaaashidhoo.
